Summary

This study introduces a low-cost virtual reality (VR) platform for neglect rehabilitation. The platform significantly improved patient neglect and attention, with lasting effects observed in daily activities.

Background:

Visuospatial neglect significantly impacts daily living, necessitating effective rehabilitation strategies.
Virtual Reality (VR) offers engaging, real-world scenarios for rehabilitation but often involves costly and cumbersome equipment.
Developing accessible VR solutions is crucial for widespread adoption in clinical and home-based settings.

Observation:

A novel, low-cost VR platform was developed using consumer equipment for intensive, home-based neglect rehabilitation.
The platform was tested on a chronic neglect patient (IB) who had not responded to traditional therapies.
The system provides real-world scenarios and visual feedback of the patient's body in the virtual environment.

Findings:

The patient demonstrated significant improvements in both neglect symptoms and attention levels.
These improvements were sustained at a 5-month follow-up evaluation.
Observed benefits generalized to real-world daily living activities.

Implications:

Low-cost, accessible VR platforms can be highly effective for visuospatial deficit rehabilitation.
VR rehabilitation, particularly with real-world scenarios and body feedback, may outperform classical methods.
Home-based VR rehabilitation offers a promising avenue for intensive patient training and improved outcomes.
