Background:

Ward attending rounds are crucial for internal medicine education.
Effective teaching is necessary but insufficient for successful rounds.
Understanding perceptions of attending rounds (AR) can enhance learning, teaching, and patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

Expand the conceptual framework of 30 attributes for successful AR.
Identify and group the most important attributes.
Create a cognitive map to define dimensions of successful rounds.

Main Methods:

Multi-institutional, cross-sectional study.
Recruited residents, medical students, and faculty.
Used card-sorting, Likert scales, and cognitive mapping (MDS, cluster analysis).

Main Results:

36 faculty, 49 residents, 40 students participated.
Top attributes: "Teach by example," "Sharing thought processes," "Be approachable."
Identified five domains: Learning Atmosphere, Clinical Teaching, Teaching Style, Communicating Expectations, Team Management.

Conclusions:

Five essential domains contribute to successful ward attending rounds.
These domains provide a framework for improving medical education and patient care during rounds.
