Summary

Maternal inflammatory cytokines in the third trimester are linked to a mother's own body fat, but not the baby's size. This study excluded gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to clarify these relationships.

  • Measured maternal cytokines at 28 and 37 weeks gestation.
  • Assessed maternal adiposity via Body Mass Index (BMI) and bioelectrical impedance analysis; assessed fetal adiposity via ultrasound and birthweight.
  • Main Results:

    • Of 71 women, 45% were obese (mean BMI 29.2 kg/m²).
    • Maternal Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels correlated with maternal adiposity.
    • No correlation was found between maternal Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α), Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-8 levels and fetal adiposity or birthweight.

    Conclusions:

    • In non-diabetic pregnant women, circulating maternal cytokines are associated with maternal adiposity in the third trimester.
    • These maternal cytokine levels do not appear to be associated with fetal adiposity or birthweight in this cohort.
    • Findings suggest maternal inflammatory markers are linked to maternal metabolic status rather than directly influencing fetal growth in the absence of GDM.
