Birth Control Methods01:22

Birth Control Methods

Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although vasectomy...
Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems01:21

Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems

Controlled-release systems for intravaginal and intrauterine drug delivery have been developed primarily for the administration of contraceptive steroid hormones. These delivery routes circumvent first-pass hepatic metabolism, thereby enhancing bioavailability and allowing for reduced systemic dosages compared to oral administration. Such approaches contribute to improved therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance, particularly in long-term contraceptive regimens.Intravaginal Drug Delivery...

Pharmaceutical Alternatives: Stability-Related Therapeutic Nonequivalence

Generic intravenous (IV) drugs are considered bioequivalent to their branded counterparts due to their 100% bioavailability upon administration. However, variations in stability among different drug products can significantly influence their therapeutic performance, even if they are pharmaceutically equivalent.Cefuroxime, a prophylactic antimicrobial, is often used as a single-dose IV injection for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting surgery. A 3 g dose typically provides...

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast, controlled...
Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle01:22

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle

The ovarian cycle regulates endometrial changes throughout a single menstrual cycle via the coordinated action of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotrophins.
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH release.
Framing Effects03:26

Framing Effects

Information is everywhere and its presentation—such as how and when items are presented—can impact our perceptions and decisions surrounding the info. This broad concept umbrellas framing effects—influences that occur due to the way information is framed in its appearance, whether it’s purely the order or the specific wording of a message. Let’s take a look at numerous ways in which two versions of something can objectively say the same thing, yet we respond in different ways based on the...

Summary

Women rarely use emergency contraception (EC) repeatedly. Instead, access to EC encourages a shift towards regular, highly effective contraception methods, reassuring for reproductive health.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Contraception Research
  • Public Health Policy

Background:

  • Emergency contraception (EC) availability is crucial for reproductive health.
  • Concerns exist regarding potential overuse of EC as a primary method.
  • Understanding women's contraceptive choices post-EC is vital for effective family planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of repeated emergency contraception (EC) use among women with access to it.
  • To determine if EC is used as a substitute for regular contraception.
  • To analyze changes in contraceptive method selection after EC use.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 9201 women's records from Hong Kong clinics (2006-2008).
  • Examined 11014 instances of EC provision.
  • Statistical tests (chi-squared, Wilcoxon signed rank) assessed demographic associations and changes in contraceptive use.

Main Results:

  • Only 8.5% of women used EC twice within a year; repeated use beyond twice was linked to relationship instability.
  • No-contraceptive use decreased significantly post-EC (20.6% to 3.4% at 12 months).
  • Highly effective contraceptive method use increased substantially (3.5% to 27.7% at 12 months).

Conclusions:

  • Low rates of repeated emergency contraception (EC) use were observed.
  • EC use is associated with a positive transition to regular, more effective contraceptive methods.
  • Findings are reassuring regarding EC's role as a backup, not a primary, contraceptive strategy.
