This study found that bowel irregularities affect 18.1% of Saudi adults, with older individuals and those with specific diet and chronic disease factors being more affected. Findings provide a baseline for improving bowel health in Saudi Arabia.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Bowel patterns are crucial indicators of gastrointestinal health.
- Understanding bowel habits in specific populations is essential for targeted health interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate bowel patterns and associated variables in an adult Saudi population.
- To establish a baseline for future research and interventions related to bowel health in Saudi Arabia.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 10,000 high school students and their family members in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
- A 21-item questionnaire assessed bowel function, habits, frequency, socio-demographics, diet, chronic diseases, and medications.
- Data collected between February and April 2011.
Main Results:
- 18.1% of respondents reported irregular or abnormal bowel movements.
- Individuals over 60 years old had a higher likelihood of bowel pattern abnormalities (OR=1.8).
- Dietary habits, chronic diseases, educational status, and occupation were significantly associated with bowel movements. Consuming more vegetables, fruits, and dairy was linked to normal bowel function.
Conclusions:
- The study provides baseline data on bowel patterns in the Saudi population.
- Findings highlight the influence of age, diet, and chronic diseases on bowel health.
- Results can inform the development of targeted intervention strategies for improving bowel function.
