Area of Science:

  • Kinesiology
  • Physical Education
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Physical activity guidelines in physical education are crucial for student health.
  • Pedometers are commonly used to quantify physical activity, but accuracy varies by device.
  • Previous research established step/min cut-points using Yamax pedometers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To replicate previous Yamax pedometer findings using the Walk4Life (W4L) pedometer.
  • To determine W4L pedometer steps/min cut-point intervals for 33% and 50% physical activity (%PA) guidelines in physical education.
  • To validate W4L pedometer accuracy in discriminating between physical activity guideline achievement levels.

Main Methods:

  • Field-based criterion-referenced validation.

Assessing the Accuracy of Fitness Smartwatch Data for Cardiovascular and Physical Activity Monitoring: A Validation Study in Digital Health

Published on: February 21, 2025

  • Collected concurrent pedometer (W4L and Yamax) and behavioral observation (%PA) data from 411 students (grades 5-12) across 75 physical education lessons.
  • Analyzed data using Pearson r correlation and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis.
  • Main Results:

    • Strong correlation (r=0.96) between steps/min and %PA for both W4L and Yamax pedometers.
    • W4L pedometer demonstrated high accuracy (ROC AUC ≥ 98%) in discriminating %PA guideline achievement.
    • W4L steps/min cut-points for the 33%PA guideline were significantly lower than Yamax, with borderline overlap for the 50%PA guideline.

    Conclusions:

    • W4L pedometer steps/min strongly correlates with %PA and accurately discriminates physical education activity guidelines.
    • Steps/min values for achieving physical education guidelines are dependent on the pedometer brand.
    • Consider pedometer brand for accurate implementation and surveillance of physical activity in educational settings.
