Purpose of the Study:

  • To document the epidemiological patterns of skin diseases in children under 12 years old in Baghdad, Iraq.
  • To provide updated data on paediatric dermatoses in a developing country context.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 663 children under 12 years of age.
  • Data was collected from patients attending a dermatology outpatient clinic in Baghdad during 2008.

Main Results:

  • Infectious dermatoses were the most prevalent (32.3%), followed by eczematous (20.8%) and pigmentary (17.8%) conditions.
  • Papulosquamous, drug-induced, and nutritional deficiency dermatoses were also documented, alongside miscellaneous cases.

Conclusions:

  • Infectious and eczematous conditions represent the leading causes of paediatric dermatoses in the studied Iraqi population.
  • The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and further research into the rising trends of childhood skin diseases in the region.
