This study investigated the link between transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) gene variations and suicide behavior. The T/T genotype of TGF-β1 codon 10 polymorphism was found more frequently in individuals with a history of suicide attempts.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Psychiatry
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- Suicide behavior is a complex issue with numerous identified risk factors.
- The role of cytokines, including transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), in psychiatric conditions and suicide behavior is under investigation.
- Genetic polymorphisms can influence cytokine expression, suggesting a potential genetic component in suicide behavior.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the association between transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) codon 10 (T/C) polymorphisms (rs1982073) and suicide behavior.
- To determine if specific TGF-β1 genotypes are more prevalent in individuals with a history of suicide behavior.
Main Methods:
- Case-control study design involving 145 individuals with suicide behavior and 200 controls.
- Genotyping of the TGF-β1 codon 10 (T/C) polymorphism using allele-specific oligonucleotide polymerase chain reaction.
Main Results:
- The TGF-β1 codon 10 T/T genotype was significantly more common in the suicide behavior group (41.7%) compared to the control group (27%).
- Statistical analysis indicated a significant association between TGF-β1 (codon 10) T/C polymorphisms and suicide behavior.
Conclusions:
- The findings suggest a potential genetic link between TGF-β1 codon 10 polymorphisms and an increased risk of suicide behavior.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanisms underlying this association.
