[Use of echography in the diagnosis of gastroduodenal pathology in children]
Insights
Echography effectively diagnoses pediatric gastroduodenal conditions like gastritis and ulcers. This imaging technique also helps assess stomach emptying and gallbladder function in children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Medical Imaging
- Diagnostic Ultrasound
Background:
- Gastroduodenal pathologies are common in children.
- Accurate diagnosis and functional assessment are crucial for effective treatment.
- Echography offers a non-invasive imaging modality.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the diagnostic utility of echography for pediatric gastroduodenal diseases.
- To assess the evacuatory function of the stomach and gallbladder in children.
- To correlate echographic findings with specific gastroduodenal pathologies.
Main Methods:
- Echography (ultrasound) was performed on 285 children with gastroduodenal pathology and 206 healthy controls.
- Stomach evacuatory function was measured using raw egg yolk as an acoustic marker in a 5% glucose solution.
- Gallbladder evacuatory function was simultaneously assessed.
Main Results:
- Echography demonstrated significant potential in diagnosing gastritis, gastroduodenitis, and peptic ulcers in children.
- The study identified specific echographic features indicative of these conditions.
- A trend towards increased gallbladder evacuatory function was observed in children with gastroduodenal pathology.
Conclusions:
- Echography is a valuable tool for diagnosing common pediatric gastroduodenal disorders.
- The assessment of stomach and gallbladder function using echography provides complementary diagnostic information.
- Further research can explore the clinical implications of altered gallbladder function in pediatric gastroduodenal disease.
Abstract:
The stomach and duodenum were examined by echography in 285 children with gastroduodenal pathology and in 206 healthy children. Evacuatory function of the stomach was assessed in accordance with the rate of evacuation from the stomach of an acoustic marker, raw egg yolk which was introduced into the stomach preliminarily filled with 5% glucose. The potentialities of echography have been demonstrated for gastritis, gastroduodenitis and peptic ulcer. Simultaneous examination of evacuatory function of the gallbladder in children with gastroduodenal pathology has revealed a tendency towards its increase.
