Background:

Systematic reviews aim to inform new research but often fail to direct studies effectively.
Gaps in evidence, such as insufficient data on subpopulations or inappropriate outcomes, hinder review comprehensiveness.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe a systematic process for identifying and prioritizing future research needs.
To enhance the impact of systematic reviews by aligning research with patient and community priorities.

Main Methods:

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Evidence-based Practice Center Program developed a systematic process.
Stakeholder panels (patients, clinicians, policymakers, etc.) provided input to refine identified evidence gaps.
Prioritization exercises were conducted through conference calls and other collaborative methods.

Main Results:

Eight Evidence-based Practice Centers applied this process to various clinical and policy topics since 2010.
Reports identified 4 to 15 high-priority future research needs per topic.
Considerations for study design were included alongside prioritized research needs.

Conclusions:

This systematic approach, incorporating stakeholder input, can identify high-priority research needs.
Prioritizing research needs can accelerate the development and implementation of relevant, impactful studies.
