Summary

Psoriatic patients exhibit reduced capillary density and more abnormal capillaries in nailfold capillaroscopy compared to healthy individuals. These microcirculatory changes are linked to nail involvement but not disease duration or severity.

Background:

Nailfold capillaroscopy is a valuable diagnostic tool for assessing microvascular alterations.
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the skin and joints, with potential systemic implications.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate nailfold capillaroscopy findings in patients with psoriasis.
To compare microcirculatory changes in psoriatic individuals versus healthy controls.

Main Methods:

Nailfold capillaroscopy was conducted on 46 patients with psoriasis and 50 controls.
Assessment included microscopic morphology, capillary density, and avascular areas.

Main Results:

Psoriatic patients showed significantly lower capillary density (p=0.0005) and increased avascular areas (p=0.0035).

A higher prevalence of abnormal capillaries, particularly coiled forms (p<0.0001), was observed in the psoriasis group.

Avascular areas were more frequent in psoriatic individuals with nail involvement (p=0.047).

Conclusions:

Psoriasis is associated with reduced capillary density and increased morphological abnormalities in nailfold capillaries.
These microvascular changes may correlate with nail manifestations of psoriasis.
