Novice cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills improved with video training, but voice-feedback exercises were essential for achieving adequate CPR quality. This self-learning station effectively enhances CPR acquisition for beginners.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Emergency Medicine
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training
Background:
- Novice learners require effective methods for acquiring complex skills like cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Self-learning stations offer a flexible approach to medical training, but their efficacy needs validation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate a self-learning station for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) acquisition in novices.
- To assess the independent and combined efficacy of video-based instruction and voice-feedback exercises on CPR skills.
Main Methods:
- A self-learning station combining video instructions and computer-based exercises with voice feedback was developed.
- 125 pharmacy students were assessed at baseline, post-video training, and post-voice feedback training.
- Adequate CPR skills were defined by specific metrics for compression depth, release, rate, and ventilation volume.
Main Results:
- Video training alone showed limited improvement in most CPR skill metrics.
- Subsequent voice-feedback training significantly enhanced compression depth, ventilation volume, and overall CPR quality.
- The combined approach led to a substantial increase in students achieving adequate CPR skills, particularly in compression techniques.
Conclusions:
- Video-based learning is a useful introduction to CPR skills for novices.
- Voice-feedback exercises are crucial for refining CPR techniques and achieving acceptable skill levels.
- The developed self-learning station, particularly with the addition of voice feedback, is effective for novice CPR training.
