Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System01:26

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System

3.8K
At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is...

Drug Delivery: Overview

623
The selection of a drug's delivery route depends upon its physicochemical properties, including lipid or water solubility and ionization, as well as the therapeutic requirement, such as immediate or sustained effect. These routes can be divided into three primary categories: enteral, parenteral, and topical.
Enteral delivery involves administering drugs directly through swallowing, sublingual placement, or buccal application. Orally administered drugs predominantly navigate the...

Current Trends in Nursing II01:30

Current Trends in Nursing II

1.8K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Nursing Implementation01:15

Nursing Implementation

5.8K
Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.

Drug Delivery: Parenteral Route01:29

Drug Delivery: Parenteral Route

1.3K
The parenteral route is a critical method of drug administration. It delivers compounds directly into the systemic circulation and bypasses the gastrointestinal tract. This approach is particularly advantageous for drugs that exhibit poor absorption or instability when administered orally.
There are three primary parenteral routes: intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), and subcutaneous (SC). The IV route introduces the drug directly into the bloodstream, ensuring immediate action. The IM route...

Additional Routes of Drug Administration01:18

Additional Routes of Drug Administration

4.5K
Choosing the appropriate route of drug administration is significantly influenced by two key factors: the therapeutic objectives and the inherent properties of the drug being used.
Administering drugs via inhalation allows for the direct delivery of gaseous, volatile substances or droplets to different parts of the respiratory tract. One of the advantages of the inhalation route is the rapid absorption of drugs into the circulatory system, which is possible because of the large surface area of...

Summary

Delivery method impacts breastfeeding duration, with induced vaginal and cesarean births showing shorter durations. Breastfeeding initiation was not significantly affected by delivery method. Additional support may be needed for mothers with assisted deliveries.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Lactation Science

Background:

  • Breastfeeding is crucial for infant health.
  • Delivery method may influence breastfeeding outcomes.
  • Understanding these associations can inform postpartum support.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between delivery method and breastfeeding initiation, duration at 4 weeks, duration at 6 months, and overall duration.
  • To analyze data from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II (2005-2006).

Main Methods:

  • Utilized multivariable analyses and event-history analysis on data from 3,026 participants.
  • Adjusted for demographic characteristics, pre-delivery breastfeeding intentions, and attitudes.
  • Compared breastfeeding outcomes across spontaneous vaginal, induced vaginal, emergency cesarean, and planned cesarean deliveries.

Main Results:

  • No significant association found between delivery method and breastfeeding initiation.
  • Induced vaginal deliveries were associated with significantly lower odds of breastfeeding at 4 weeks (AOR=0.53) and 6 months (AOR=0.60).
  • Emergency cesarean deliveries were associated with significantly lower odds of breastfeeding at 6 months (AOR=0.68). Median breastfeeding duration was longest for spontaneous vaginal delivery (45.2 weeks) and shortest for emergency cesarean (21.5 weeks).

Conclusions:

  • While delivery method does not affect breastfeeding initiation, it significantly impacts breastfeeding duration.
  • Women with induced vaginal and cesarean deliveries experience shorter breastfeeding durations.
  • Enhanced postpartum support may be beneficial for mothers with assisted delivery methods to improve breastfeeding outcomes.
