Preclinical Development: Overview01:28

Preclinical Development: Overview

Preclinical development consists of a series of tests that ensure the safety and efficacy of a new therapeutic compound before it is tested in humans. There are four main phases to this process. First, safety pharmacology tests are conducted to ensure the drug does not produce any acutely harmful effects. These tests examine parameters such as bronchoconstriction, cardiac dysrhythmias, blood pressure changes, and ataxia. Next, preliminary toxicological testing is performed to determine the...

Summary

The Magnetic Resonance Image Overlay System (MR-IOS) is MRI-compatible and accurate for needle placement in musculoskeletal interventions. This augmented reality system significantly improves technical efficacy and operator performance compared to freehand techniques.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Augmented Reality
  • Musculoskeletal Interventions

Background:

  • Clinical augmented reality (AR) systems enhance medical procedures.
  • MRI-guided interventions require precise instrument navigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Assess the MRI compatibility, accuracy, technical efficacy, and operator performance of the Magnetic Resonance Image Overlay System (MR-IOS).

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated MR-IOS impact on MRI environment via signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and uniformity.
  • Assessed system accuracy using a spine phantom with 62 needle insertions.
  • Tested technical efficacy and operator performance with 40 novice operators comparing MR-IOS to freehand technique.

Main Results:

  • MR-IOS minimally affected SNR (≤2%) with no perceptible image quality change.
  • Mean needle insertion errors: entry 1.6mm, depth 0.7mm, angle 1.5°, target 1.9mm.
  • MR-IOS success rate (80.95%) significantly higher than freehand (35.0%); reduced needle path distance and presumed tissue damage.

Conclusions:

  • MR-IOS is MRI-compatible, accurate, and technically efficacious for musculoskeletal interventions.
  • The system demonstrably improves operator performance over unassisted techniques.
  • MR-IOS is suitable for further clinical evaluation.
