Introduction to Language of Pathophysiology l01:25

Introduction to Language of Pathophysiology l

Pathophysiology investigates how biological mechanisms—typically starting at the cellular level—disrupt normal bodily functions. It bridges anatomy and physiology to explain the progression of disease. With this foundation, it is important to understand the following key terms used to describe disease processes: Diagnosis:The process of identifying a disease using clinical evaluation, including signs (objective evidence like rashes), symptoms (subjective experiences like pain), laboratory test...

Introduction to Language of Pathophysiology ll

This lesson explores key terms that describe how diseases progress, their outcomes, and their distribution in populations.Diagnostic tests identify diseases and monitor treatment. These include blood and urine tests, biopsies, imaging (X-ray, MRI), and detection of infectious agents.Remission is a reduction or disappearance of symptoms.Exacerbation refers to the worsening of symptoms, such as increased wheezing during an asthma attack.A precipitating factor triggers an acute episode, while a...
The Professional Nurse01:22

The Professional Nurse

Professional nurses are not limited to bedside care and are taking roles of greater responsibility. A nurse should have a knowledge-based practice, including personal, theoretical, procedural, cultural, and reflexive knowledge. Additionally, nurses must be competent in cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and ethical/legal skills. Some of the best attributes of successful nurses include the following:
Communication skills: These are critical characteristics, especially speaking and listening.

Interdisciplinary Care: The Health Care Team-II

An interdisciplinary team includes many healthcare professionals working together and utilizing their skills, knowledge, and expertise to provide holistic and quality patient care. Here are a few more healthcare professionals.
Physical Therapist
A physical therapist (PT) aims to restore function or prevent additional impairment in a patient following an injury or disease. Massage, heat, cold, water, sonar waves, exercises, and electrical stimulation are some treatments used by PTs to treat...

Sputum Studies I: Gram Stain, cytology, and Acid-fast smear and culture

Sputum studies are a critical part of diagnosing and treating numerous respiratory conditions. These studies involve obtaining sputum samples for analysis to identify pathogenic organisms and assess the presence of abnormal cells indicative of malignant conditions. This lesson will delve into three fundamental sputum studies: Gram Stain, Cytology, and Acid-fast Smear and Culture.
Gram Stain
The Gram Stain is an integral part of sputum studies. It involves the staining of sputum, which permits...

Summary

Pathology workforce in Nepal private labs often lacks required qualifications and exceeds ethical limits. Many labs are led by unqualified staff, impacting service quality and adherence to regulations.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Laboratory Science
  • Healthcare Workforce Analysis
  • Clinical Pathology

Background:

  • The status of pathology workforce in Nepal requires definition for improved laboratory services.
  • Understanding the qualifications and ethical adherence of laboratory medicine professionals is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the current status of laboratory medicine professionals in Nepal's private pathology sector.
  • To investigate the regulation of ethics and limitations for different workforce levels.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted.
  • Interviews with heads of private clinical institutions and observation of 373 private pathology laboratories were performed.
  • Data collected from August 2008 to January 2009.

Main Results:

  • 41% of labs were led by laboratory assistants, and only 30% had qualified "officer level" pathology workforces.
  • 66% of laboratories lacked intermediate-level pathology workforces.
  • Specialist-level workforces were scarce, with only 11% in histocytopathology, 3% in clinical microbiology, and 1% in cytopathology & hematology.

Conclusions:

  • Workforce leadership in private laboratories did not meet good laboratory practice norms.
  • Pathology workforces exceeded their limitations and ethical boundaries.
  • Non-medical professionals interfered in laboratory services, particularly in microbiology and biochemistry.
