Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the clinical and foot characteristics of Maori with diabetes.
  • To utilize a podiatry-specific assessment tool for comprehensive evaluation.
  • To identify specific podiatric needs within this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study design.
  • Recruitment of participants with diabetes from Maori Primary Health Organisations.
  • Collection of podiatric (vascular, neurological, musculoskeletal), demographic, and general medical data.

  • Fifty-three participants with a mean diabetes duration of 12 years and HbA1c of 8.3% were recruited.
  • While neurovascular results were unremarkable, 53% presented with pre-ulcerative lesions and 8% with current pedal ulceration.

  • The findings underscore the necessity for routine podiatric screening and management in Maori with diabetes.
