    Summary

    Percutaneous cryoablation offers a treatment option for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients unsuitable for surgery. This minimally invasive procedure demonstrated notable survival rates and manageable side effects in a recent study.

    Background:

    • Cryosurgery is an alternative for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with advanced disease, poor health, or recurrence.
    • It is also an option for localized lung cancer patients who decline traditional surgery.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of percutaneous cryoablation for NSCLC.
    • To assess survival rates and adverse events associated with the procedure.

    Main Methods:

    • Six hundred and twenty-five NSCLC patients underwent percutaneous cryoablation.
    • One hundred and fifty patients were followed for 12 to 38 months to assess outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 64%, 45%, and 32%, respectively.
    • Adverse effects such as pneumothorax and pulmonary infection were generally mild and transient.
    • In vitro studies suggest cryotherapy may enhance the immune system's anti-tumor response.

    Conclusions:

    • Percutaneous cryoablation is a viable treatment option for selected NSCLC patients.
    • Further comparative studies are needed to establish its role alongside other lung cancer therapies.
    • Investigating immunomodulators to enhance cryoimmunology could improve treatment outcomes.
