Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a Brain Fitness Center (BFC) program utilizing computer-based brain-training for Service Members with TBI.
  • To assess changes in self-reported cognitive, functional, and life satisfaction symptoms post-intervention.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective chart review of the first 29 participants in the BFC program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
  • Participants completed subjective assessments including the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory-4 (MPAI-4), Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NBSI), and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) pre- and post-intervention.
  • Statistical analysis was performed on pre- and post-intervention scores.

Main Results:

  • Two of three self-report questionnaires (MPAI-4 and NBSI) showed statistically significant reductions in symptom severity (p < .05).
  • No significant differences were found in the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) scores.
  • Preliminary results indicate a trend towards improved self-reported cognitive and functional symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • The Brain Fitness Center program shows promise in reducing self-reported cognitive and functional symptoms in military Service Members with TBI.
  • Computer-based cognitive rehabilitation may serve as a valuable adjunct to traditional therapies for this population.
  • Further research with larger sample sizes and controlled designs is warranted to confirm efficacy.
