Abstract:
Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) is an original cognitive approach developed in Canada that provides an effective alternative for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is better tolerated than Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the core CBT technique and gold-standard treatment for OCD. I-CBT targets inferential confusion, a central concept in which the person places more trust in imagined possibilities than in directly observable reality. I-CBT aims to deconstruct this confusion. Key therapeutic steps help the patient step out of the story created by OCD and reconnect with reality. Empirical data confirm the effectiveness of I-CBT in reducing OCD symptoms, with benefits that are maintained over the long term.
