Abstract:
Potent analogues of GLP-1 and GIP are used in the indication of weight reduction. In addition to their significant effects on body weight., these agents reduce systolic blood pressure up to 7,2mmHg. The reduction in blood pressure partly explains the substantial cardiovascular protective effect observed with these molecules. The underlying mechanisms are multifactorial, involving weight-related, vascular, neurogenic, renal, and anti-inflammatory pathways. The desired effect on weight leads to improved treatment adherence compared with other anti-hypertensive therapeutic modalities. Consequently GLP-1 and GIP analogues could potentially be used for antihypertensive indications in the future for overweight or obese patients.
