[Primary hyperaldosteronism : updates]

Primary hyperaldosteronism is a common and potentially curable cause of hypertension (HTN), affecting 10 to 15% of hypertensive patients. Underdiagnosed, it is associated with a higher cardiovascular risk than essential HTN. Recent recommendations from the Endocrine Society (2025) and the European Society of Cardiology (2024) advocate screening in all patients with newly diagnosed HTN. The diagnosis is based on an increased aldosterone-to-renin ratio. A new classification helps assess disease severity and the likelihood of a unilateral form,. Treatment relies on mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists or surgery in cases of lateralized disease, according to patient preference. New therapies targeting aldosterone synthase are currently under development.
