Abstract:
The definition of a "heatwave" varies across countries, although its consequences on morbidity and mortality are broadly similar in European population. Excess mortality during heatwaves is significant and primarily affects vulnerable populations, particularly older individuals and those with cardiovascular comorbidities such as hypertension. The management of hypertension during the summer and during heatwaves is complex, as both systematic antihypertensive treatment reduction and maintenance of treatment despite a decrease in blood pressure may have severe consequences. Therefore, management requires a multidisciplinary approach, involving the patient, and should be based on regular monitoring of clinical parameters, patient education, and facilitated access to healthcare professionals trained to respond to these situations.
