Summary

Bioabsorbable implants used for torn glenoid labrum repair may cause granulomatous reactions, leading to pain and reduced shoulder motion. Further procedures were needed, but patients ultimately recovered without long-term issues.

Background:

Bioabsorbable implants are commonly used for torn glenoid labrum repair to address shoulder instability.
These implants were presumed safe with minimal toxicity and antigenicity.
Previous studies indicated potential for nonspecific granulomatous reactions in bone and soft tissues.

Purpose of the Study:

To report adverse effects of bioabsorbable implants in glenoid labrum repair.
To investigate the incidence and nature of adverse reactions in patients undergoing this procedure.

Main Methods:

Case series of five patients (six shoulders) undergoing glenoid labrum repair with bioabsorbable implants.
Clinical assessment of pain and shoulder motion post-implantation.
Histological examination to identify tissue reactions.
Arthroscopic lavage and debridement for treatment of synovitis.

Main Results:

All patients experienced increased pain and decreased shoulder motion after implant insertion.
Histological analysis confirmed granulomatous reactions in all cases.
All patients required arthroscopic lavage and debridement to manage synovitis.

Conclusions:

Bioabsorbable implants in glenoid labrum repair can elicit adverse granulomatous reactions.
While initial recovery required intervention, no long-term side effects were observed.
This highlights the need for careful consideration of implant-related tissue responses.
