Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of instant hot noodle burns in pediatric populations.
  • To analyze the thermal properties, including temperature and cooling rates, of instant hot noodles.

Main Methods:

  • Retrieved data on instant hot noodle burns in children from the New South Wales Severe Burn Injury Database (2005-2010).
  • Prepared five popular instant hot noodle brands (cup and packet varieties) according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Recorded initial post-cooking temperatures and time to cool to 50°C for each preparation.

Main Results:

  • 291 children suffered instant hot noodle burns (5.4% of pediatric burn unit referrals).
  • Over one-third of cases received inadequate first aid.
  • Cup noodles, especially in narrower containers, reached higher temperatures (>80°C) and cooled slower (average 52.3 min to 50°C) than packet noodles prepared in microwaves.

Conclusions:

  • Instant hot noodle burns in children, while relatively uncommon, frequently involve inadequate first aid.
  • Noodles prepared as directed often exceed temperatures capable of causing burns.
  • Enhanced consumer and parental awareness regarding burn risks during preparation is essential.
