Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Oncology
  • Pathophysiology

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma (MM) frequently involves the kidneys, leading to significant morbidity.
  • Renal complications in MM are diverse and linked to the physicochemical properties of monoclonal light chains.
  • Understanding the spectrum of renal involvement is critical for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To discuss the spectrum of renal involvement in multiple myeloma.
  • To describe the pathophysiological mechanisms of kidney complications in MM.
  • To correlate kidney morphology with clinical presentation.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on renal involvement in multiple myeloma.
  • Analysis of pathophysiological mechanisms of kidney damage.
  • Correlation of histological findings with clinical manifestations.

Main Results:

  • Excessive synthesis of light chains is a key factor in various renal lesions in MM.
  • Specific physicochemical characteristics of light chains dictate the type of renal damage.
  • Morphological changes in the kidneys correlate with clinical signs and symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Active treatment of multiple myeloma is recommended irrespective of the type of renal lesion.
  • Current therapeutic strategies can reverse renal damage in MM patients.
  • Effective management of renal complications improves the overall prognosis for patients with multiple myeloma.
