Positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MR) with (18)fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) is feasible for evaluating malignant lymphoma therapy response. Initial results show high accuracy in assessing treatment effectiveness in lymphoma patients.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Nuclear Medicine

Background:

  • Malignant lymphoma requires accurate therapy response evaluation.
  • Positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MR) offers integrated anatomical and metabolic imaging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of (18)fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) PET/MR for therapy response evaluation in malignant lymphoma patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of nine lymphoma patients undergoing FDG-PET/MR before and after chemotherapy.
  • Independent evaluation of scans by two nuclear medicine physicians using Ann Arbor classification and a five-point image quality scale.
  • Calculation of interrater agreement using weighted kappa (κ).

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • All initial scans revealed increased FDG uptake, with Ann Arbor stages ranging from I to IV.
  • Complete response to chemotherapy was observed in all but one patient on follow-up scans.
  • PET image quality was rated as very good or excellent; interrater agreement was excellent for staging (κ = 0.97) and good for image quality (κ = 0.41).

Conclusions:

  • FDG-PET/MR demonstrates promising initial feasibility for therapy response assessment in malignant lymphoma.
  • The technique shows high accuracy in staging and evaluating treatment efficacy.
  • High image quality and interrater agreement support its potential clinical utility.
