Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...
Introspection01:29

Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

Summary

Suicide attempters exhibit higher impulsivity, particularly in attention and motor control. Targeting impulsivity may be crucial for suicide prevention strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Suicide attempt is a significant risk factor for completed suicide.
  • Understanding the psychological traits associated with suicide attempts is crucial for prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate trait impulsivity in individuals who have attempted suicide.
  • To analyze impulsivity in relation to clinical data among suicide attempters.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated 93 suicide attempters and 113 healthy controls using the Japanese version of the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11J).
  • Assessed impulsivity scores and analyzed them against clinical data.

Main Results:

  • Suicide attempters scored significantly higher on total BIS-11J, attention impulsivity, and motor impulsivity compared to controls.
  • Attempters diagnosed with schizophrenia and psychotic disorders showed higher scores in total BIS-11J and non-planning impulsivity.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated impulsivity is a key characteristic of suicide attempters.
  • Impulsivity control should be a target for developing effective suicide prevention interventions.
