In human women, oogenesis produces one mature egg cell or ovum for every precursor cell that enters meiosis.   • Two samples were used: an operative sample (495 women) and a population-based sample (131 women).
  • Serum was collected for analysis of nine PFAS using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.
  • Endometriosis was diagnosed via surgical visualization or MRI; logistic regression was used for analysis, adjusting for age, BMI, and parity.

Main Results:

  • Serum perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorononanoic acid were associated with endometriosis in the operative sample.
  • Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and PFOA were associated with increased odds of moderate/severe endometriosis.
  • Associations were attenuated after adjusting for parity.

Conclusions:

  • Specific per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) show an association with endometriosis diagnosis.
  • These findings require further investigation and corroboration to establish causality.
