Pulsed electromembrane extraction (PEME) offers an efficient, inexpensive method for extracting ionizable compounds from biological fluids. This novel technique achieves high preconcentration factors and recoveries, outperforming conventional electromembrane extraction.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Separation Science
Background:
- Electromembrane extraction (EME) is a liquid-phase extraction technique.
- Existing EME methods can lack stability and repeatability.
- Efficient extraction of ionizable compounds from complex matrices is challenging.
Purpose of the Study:
- Introduce pulsed electromembrane extraction (PEME) as a novel, efficient, and cost-effective method.
- Optimize PEME parameters for extracting model analytes from biological fluids.
- Compare PEME performance against conventional EME.
Main Methods:
- Pulsed electromembrane extraction (PEME) setup.
- Optimization of extraction time, applied voltage, pulse duration, and outage period using experimental design.
- Analysis of model analytes in biological matrices.
Main Results:
- Achieved high repeatability with relative standard deviations (RSDs) below 4.4%.
- Obtained preconcentration factors of 100-140 and recoveries of 95-108%.
- Demonstrated excellent linearity (R² > 0.9955) over 5-200 ng mL⁻¹ and low limits of detection (1.0 ng mL⁻¹).
Conclusions:
- PEME is a stable and repeatable technique for ionizable compound extraction.
- PEME offers significant advantages over conventional EME in terms of efficiency and performance.
- The optimized PEME method is suitable for analyzing analytes in biological fluids.
