Summary

Intravenous (IV) fluid therapy shows limited evidence for preventing dehydration or cramps in athletes. Its use should be reserved for specific, monitored cases, not as a routine practice.

Background:

Euhydration is typically achieved through normal dietary intake.
Dehydration and exercise-associated muscle cramps can impair athletic performance.
Intravenous (IV) fluid administration is explored as an ergogenic aid for hydration.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the existing literature on the use of IV fluids for prehydration and rehydration in athletes.
To assess the efficacy of IV fluids as an ergogenic aid in sports.

Main Methods:

A systematic search of the PubMed database was conducted in November 2011.
English-language articles were identified using keywords related to IV fluid use in sports and athletic performance.
