Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Two-stage flexor tendon reconstruction commonly uses expensive silicon rods.
  • There is a need for cost-effective alternatives in tendon grafting procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical efficacy of silicon urinary catheters as a cheaper alternative to silicon rods in two-stage flexor tendon reconstruction.
  • To compare the outcomes of using silicon urinary catheters with traditional silicon rods.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical study involving 17 patients undergoing two-stage flexor tendon grafting.
  • Silicon urinary catheters were used as tendon prostheses.
  • Preoperative classification used the Wehbe et al modification of the Boyes and Stark classification; postoperative analysis used Strickland formulation and Buck-Gramcko criteria.

Main Results:

  • Comparable clinical results were achieved using silicon urinary catheters compared to traditional silicon rods.
  • Proper pseudosheaths for tendon grafting were formed, with similar histological and physical features.
  • Silicon urinary catheters were found to be approximately fifty times less costly than Hunter's rods.

Conclusions:

  • Silicon urinary catheters are a clinically effective and significantly more affordable substitute for silicon rods in two-stage flexor tendon reconstruction.
  • This approach offers comparable functional and histological outcomes, representing a valuable cost-saving innovation in tendon grafting.
