Summary

This study presents a novel dental treatment for severe tooth wear using CAD/CAM-fabricated temporary restorations. This approach avoids tooth preparation, allowing patients to test aesthetics and function before permanent treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Restorative Dentistry
  • Dental Materials

Background:

  • Tooth wear is a growing global concern in younger patients, often multifactorial (erosion, abrasion, attrition).
  • Treating severe tooth wear, especially with significant loss of vertical dimension of occlusion, presents a challenge for dental practitioners.
  • Innovative materials and manufacturing technologies are needed for effective management of complex restorative cases.

Observation:

  • A case report details the use of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM)-fabricated temporary restorations made from high-density polymers.
  • These restorations were applied without any tooth preparation to severely worn dentition.
  • The non-preparation restorations were adhesively bonded, preserving remaining tooth structure.

Findings:

  • CAD/CAM technology enables the creation of precise temporary restorations for complex dental cases.
  • High-density polymers offer suitable properties for temporary restorations during the pretreatment phase.
  • Non-preparation restorations allow for functional, phonetic, and esthetic evaluation before definitive treatment.

Implications:

  • This approach enhances the predictability of definitive restoration design by allowing a "test drive" of the proposed treatment.
  • It provides a cost-effective method for refining restoration design, with easy modifications or replacements.
  • Preserving tooth structure through non-preparation techniques is crucial for long-term dental health.
