Insights
An unusual coronary artery anomaly, where the right coronary artery connects to the pulmonary artery, mimicked a patent arterial duct. This case highlights a rare congenital heart defect requiring precise diagnostic methods.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Congenital Heart Disease
- Vascular Anatomy
Background:
- Congenital heart defects can present with atypical anatomical variations.
- Anomalous coronary artery origins are rare but clinically significant.
- Distinguishing between different types of vascular communications in the heart is crucial for diagnosis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe a rare case of an ectopic right coronary artery communicating with the main pulmonary artery.
- To illustrate how this anomaly can clinically resemble a patent arterial duct.
- To emphasize the diagnostic approach for such rare cardiac presentations.
Main Methods:
- Detailed clinical case presentation.
- Diagnostic evaluation using Doppler echocardiography.
- Confirmation through cardiac catheterization.
- Intra-operative findings documented.
Main Results:
- A patient presented with symptoms consistent with a patent arterial duct.
- The underlying cause was identified as an ectopic right coronary artery directly communicating with the main pulmonary artery.
- Diagnostic imaging and procedures confirmed the anomalous vascular connection.
Conclusions:
- An ectopic coronary artery to pulmonary artery communication is a rare differential diagnosis for patent arterial duct.
- Comprehensive diagnostic tools, including echocardiography and cardiac catheterization, are essential for accurate identification.
- Recognition of this anomaly is vital for appropriate management and surgical planning.
Abstract:
A patient is described in whom communication between an ectopic right coronary artery and the main pulmonary artery presented with clinical features of a patent arterial duct. Full clinical data documented by Doppler echocardiography, cardiac catheterisation and intra-operative findings are described.
