Bone Marrow Sampling and Transplants01:22

Bone Marrow Sampling and Transplants

Bone marrow transplant is a potential cure for several diseases, including cancer and specific genetic disorders. Notably, this procedure is applicable for patients suffering from aplastic anemia, certain types of leukemia, severe combined immunodeficiency disease (SCID), Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, thalassemia, sickle-cell disease, and certain cancers.
The transplant begins with high doses of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, which aim to destroy the...

RACE - Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends

Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends, or RACE, is one of the most effective methods to obtain a full-length cDNA from an mRNA sequence between a known internal region to the unknown sequence at the 5’ or 3’ end. The unknown region is cloned in the cDNA by a gene-specific primer that binds the known end, and a hybrid primer that attaches a predefined anchor sequence to the unknown end of the cDNA. The sequence in between is amplified by PCR with an anchor primer and a gene-specific primer.
Since the...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Non-heart beating donor (NHBD) programs are viable in smaller cities. NHBDs contributed significantly to organ donation and transplantation in Granada, supporting program development.

Area of Science:

  • Organ transplantation
  • Nephrology
  • Public health

Background:

  • Organ donation programs are crucial for saving lives.
  • Establishing non-heart beating donor (NHBD) programs in smaller cities requires careful evaluation.
  • Brain dead donors (BDD) are the traditional source, but NHBDs offer additional potential.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of a non-heart beating donor (NHBD) program in a city with a population under 500,000.
  • To compare NHBD program results with established brain dead donor (BDD) programs within the same region.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective observational study was conducted in Granada, Spain, from 2010 to 2011.
  • Data collected included donor characteristics, organ non-validity reasons, preservation techniques, and recipient outcomes.
  • Comparison was made between NHBD and BDD data, including kidney transplants and overall organ donation rates.

Main Results:

  • The NHBD program identified 20 real donors, resulting in 21 kidney and 2 liver transplants.
  • Reasons for organ non-validity were documented.
  • Recipient outcomes showed a mean of 1.4 post-transplant hemodialysis sessions and a mean hospital stay of 25 days.

Conclusions:

  • Preliminary results indicate that NHBD programs can be successfully implemented in cities with populations under 500,000.
  • In 2011, NHBDs constituted over 20% of kidney transplants and global organ donations in the Granada province.
  • The study supports the expansion of NHBD programs to increase organ availability.
