    Summary

    Dimethylsulfoxide enhances interferon production in rats when administered after Sindbis virus. This treatment also lowered complement levels, while properdin levels appeared to increase, suggesting complex immune interactions.

    Background:

    • Interferon (IFN) is a crucial cytokine in antiviral defense.
    • Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is a known cryoprotective agent with potential immunomodulatory effects.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) on interferon (IFN) induction and complement levels in rats.
    • To explore the interaction between viral challenge, DMSO administration, and host immune responses.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats were inoculated intracardially with Sindbis virus, followed by intraperitoneal dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO).
    • Interferon titers, complement levels, and properdin levels in rat sera were measured.
