Aging

Aging is a complex biological phenomenon influenced by various processes that affect cellular and systemic functions. Several prominent theories attempt to explain its mechanisms, highlighting cellular limitations, oxidative damage, and hormonal changes as central factors in aging.
Cellular Clock Theory
The cellular clock theory posits that the human lifespan is closely tied to the finite capacity of cells to divide, a phenomenon governed by telomeres, which are protective caps at the ends of...
Exercise Stress Test01:26

Exercise Stress Test

Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Summary

This study introduces the Aging Stereotypes and Exercise Scale (ASES) to measure exercise-related stereotypes in older adults. Findings show older adults hold more positive stereotypes and negative stereotypes correlate with lower self-worth and health.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Exercise Psychology
  • Social Psychology

Background:

  • Older adults face perceived barriers to exercise.
  • Stereotypes about aging and exercise can influence participation.
  • Existing measures may not fully capture exercise-specific aging stereotypes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Aging Stereotypes and Exercise Scale (ASES).
  • To measure dimensions of aging stereotypes related to exercise outcomes and psychological barriers.
  • To examine the scale's psychometric properties and external validity.

Main Methods:

  • Development and validation of the ASES across four studies with 714 participants.
  • Factor analysis to determine the scale's structure.
  • Invariance testing across age groups.
  • Assessment of temporal stability and external validity.

Main Results:

  • A robust 3-factor model of aging stereotypes in exercise was supported, invariant across age.
  • Older adults reported more positive exercise stereotypes than younger adults.
  • Endorsement of negative stereotypes was associated with lower physical self-worth, self-rated health, and subjective age.
  • The ASES demonstrated good temporal stability over a 6-week period.

Conclusions:

  • The ASES is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring exercise-related aging stereotypes.
  • Understanding these stereotypes is crucial for promoting physical activity in older populations.
  • Age-related differences in stereotype content exist and impact older adults' well-being and health perceptions.
