  • To evaluate a web-based program's impact on implementing the 2008 Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence Guideline.
  • To compare nurses' self-reported smoking cessation intervention performance (5As) and quitline referrals between a web-based program and printed materials.

Main Methods:

  • 30 hospitals randomly assigned nurses to a web-based intervention or control (printed materials) group.
  • Nurses completed baseline and 6-month surveys on the 5As (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange) and quitline referrals.
  • Logistic regression analyzed differences in intervention components and consistent quitline referral.

Main Results:

  • The web-based program group showed significantly greater improvement in Advise, Assess, Assist, Arrange, and quitline referrals.
  • The control group also improved in Advise and quitline referrals.
  • Consistent quitline referral was higher in the intervention group (OR=1.74), particularly for webinar attendees (OR=2.34).

Conclusions:

  • The web-based program enhanced nurses' smoking cessation interventions and quitline referral consistency.
  • Printed materials alone also improved nurses' awareness and referral rates.
  • Both educational strategies are effective in increasing the use of quitline resources by healthcare providers.
