A young kitten experienced sudden breathing difficulties due to a thoracic pseudocyst, a sterile mass. Surgical removal led to a full recovery, with no recurrence of clinical signs.

Background:

  • A 2-month-old domestic shorthair kitten presented with acute dyspnea.
  • Physical examination revealed severe dyspnea and tachypnea.

Observation:

  • Pleural effusion, consistent with modified transudate, was aspirated, providing immediate respiratory relief.
  • Thoracic radiography and ultrasound identified a large soft tissue mass occupying the left hemithorax.

Findings:

  • Exploratory thoracotomy revealed a mass obliterating the left hemithorax.
  • Histological examination confirmed the mass as a thoracic pseudocyst, a sterile process resembling an organized seroma or hematoma.
  • Surgical excision of the mass was successful.

Implications:

  • Thoracic pseudocysts are a treatable cause of acute dyspnea in young cats.
  • Prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention can lead to excellent outcomes.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering sterile inflammatory processes in feline thoracic masses.
