A novel pyridinium-tagged ruthenium complex immobilized on silica acts as a highly active and reusable olefin-metathesis pre-catalyst. This supported catalyst demonstrates excellent performance in batch and continuous-flow reactions with minimal ruthenium contamination.
Area of Science:
- Catalysis
- Materials Science
- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Olefin metathesis is a crucial reaction in organic synthesis.
- Development of robust and reusable catalysts is essential for sustainable chemistry.
- Supported catalysts offer advantages in separation and recycling.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and synthesize a novel pyridinium-tagged ruthenium (Ru) complex as a supported olefin-metathesis pre-catalyst.
- To evaluate the catalytic activity and reusability of the supported pre-catalyst under batch and continuous-flow conditions.
- To investigate the control over reactivity using an oxazine-benzylidene ligand.
Main Methods:
- Design and synthesis of a pyridinium-tagged Ru complex featuring an oxazine-benzylidene ligand.
- Immobilization of the Ru complex onto sulfonated silica and silica-based cationic-exchange resin.
- Evaluation of catalytic performance in ring-closing metathesis (RCM), cross metathesis (CM), and enyne metathesis.
- Assessment of catalyst reusability and ruthenium contamination levels.
Main Results:
- The synthesized Ru complex, when anchored onto sulfonated silica, formed a robust and highly active supported pre-catalyst.
- Excellent catalytic activities were observed in RCM, CM, and enyne metathesis with low pre-catalyst loading (0.5 mol%).
- Immobilization onto a cationic-exchange resin yielded a versatile material for batch and flow reactors, reusable with high purity and low Ru contamination (<5 ppm).
Conclusions:
- A highly active and reusable supported olefin-metathesis pre-catalyst was successfully developed.
- The catalyst system demonstrates efficient performance in both batch and continuous-flow processes.
- The developed material offers a sustainable approach to olefin metathesis with minimal metal leaching.

Reduction of Alkenes: Asymmetric Catalytic Hydrogenation
The metal catalyst used can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous. When hydrogenation of an alkene generates a chiral center, a pair of enantiomeric products is expected to form. However, an enantiomeric excess of one of the products can be facilitated using an enantioselective reaction or an...
