Summary

Children with atopic dermatitis (AD) have lower levels of serum magnesium and erythrocyte zinc. Evaluating these essential trace elements may help understand AD pathogenesis and guide future research.

Background:

  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) involves inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Micronutrients are vital for immune and antioxidant functions.
  • Previous studies on micronutrients in AD show conflicting results.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum iron, copper, magnesium, and erythrocyte zinc levels in children with AD.
  • To compare these micronutrient levels with those in healthy children.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 92 children with AD and 70 controls.
  • Measured serum iron, copper, magnesium, and erythrocyte zinc.
  • Performed complete blood count.

Main Results:

  • Children with AD had lower serum magnesium and erythrocyte zinc levels compared to controls.
  • Serum iron and copper levels did not differ between groups.
  • Micronutrient levels did not correlate with AD severity.

Conclusions:

  • Lower serum magnesium and erythrocyte zinc may be relevant in pediatric AD.
  • Further research is needed to clarify the role of micronutrients in AD.
  • Assessing zinc and magnesium levels could be beneficial for AD patients.
