Summary

Subclinical delusional thinking is linked to altered brain activity in social cognition areas. This suggests reduced neural function and connectivity in regions supporting social reflection may underlie delusional beliefs in the general population.

Background:

  • Neuroimaging reveals links between delusions in psychotic disorders and social cognition brain areas like medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and lateral temporal cortex (LTC).
  • Subclinical delusional thinking in the general population is associated with impaired social cognition, suggesting potential neural underpinnings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between subclinical delusional thinking and neural function during social reflection (SR).
  • To test the hypothesis that delusional thinking correlates with altered brain activity and connectivity patterns.

Main Methods:

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to measure neural responses during SR and non-social tasks in 22 healthy subjects.
  • Resting-state activity was also assessed.
  • The Peters et al. Delusions Inventory measured the degree of delusional thinking.

Main Results:

  • Delusional thinking showed a negative correlation with left lateral temporal cortex (LTC) activity during SR.
  • Aberrant functional connectivity was observed: reduced connectivity between left LTC and left ventral MPFC, and increased connectivity between left LTC and right middle frontal/inferior temporal cortices.

  • Subclinical delusional thinking is associated with reduced neural activity in the left LTC during social reflection.
  • Altered functional connectivity in cortical social cognition networks may be a neural correlate of delusional thinking in the general population.
