Summary

Individuals with high externalizing traits show a steeper attention blink, indicating impaired attentional processing. This suggests externalizing psychopathology may stem from over-allocating attention to salient stimuli.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience
  • Psychopathology

Background:

  • Disinhibitory psychopathology is linked to externalizing traits.
  • Externalizing is associated with executive functioning deficits and affective hyper-reactivity.
  • Anomalous attention allocation is also implicated in externalizing behaviors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between externalizing traits and attention allocation.
  • To examine attentional processing in individuals with high versus low Impulsive-Antisociality.

Main Methods:

  • An attention blink task was administered to male prisoners.
  • Externalizing was assessed using the Impulsive-Antisociality scale.

Main Results:

  • Individuals with high Impulsive-Antisociality exhibited a significantly steeper attention blink.
  • This indicates less accurate identification of a second target in high externalizers.
  • Results suggest externalizers struggle with attentional control.

Conclusions:

  • Externalizing psychopathology is associated with anomalous attention allocation.
  • Externalizers may over-allocate attention to salient information.
  • This provides a novel perspective on disinhibitory psychopathology.
