Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Vascular Biology
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Context:

  • Vascular functional changes often precede observable morphological alterations in vascular injury.
  • Early identification of vascular damage is crucial for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes.
  • Current diagnostic approaches may not always detect subtle, early-stage vascular dysfunction.

Purpose:

  • To review recently developed non-invasive clinical methods for assessing vascular function.
  • To highlight techniques that can detect early signs of vascular injury before structural changes occur.
  • To provide an overview of vascular stiffness examinations, flow-mediated vasodilatation, coronary flow reserve, and myocardial flow reserve measurements.

Summary:

  • Vascular functional alterations are key indicators that precede morphological changes in vascular injury.

  • Non-invasive methods such as vascular stiffness, flow-mediated vasodilatation, coronary flow reserve (CFR), and myocardial flow reserve (MFR) measurements are discussed.
  • These techniques offer potential for earlier detection of vascular damage.
  • Impact:

    • Enables earlier diagnosis of vascular injury, potentially leading to prompt treatment and better prognosis.
    • Provides clinicians with a range of non-invasive tools to assess vascular health.
    • Advances the understanding of early vascular dysfunction and its clinical implications.
