Background:

The Dutch Association of Tropical Doctors in Training established Consult Online in 2008.
The system aims to support tropical doctors lacking access to specialist consultations.
Many experts are Dutch specialists with prior tropical medicine experience.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness and reach of the Consult Online telemedicine system.
To assess the response times and consultation volume of the service.

Main Methods:

A telemedicine platform (www.tropenopleiding.nl) was utilized.
Consultations were provided by over 50 specialists in 17 disciplines.
Data on consultation numbers, origins, and response times were collected and analyzed.

Main Results:

The system received 146 consultations from 15 countries within four years.
54% of consultations were answered on the same day, and 79% within two days.
Each consultation received an average of three expert responses.

Conclusions:

Consult Online successfully extends specialist medical advice to doctors in developing countries.
The telemedicine system demonstrates efficient response times and broad international reach.
It effectively bridges the gap in specialist knowledge for tropical doctors treating patients globally.
