    Area of Science:

    • Gerontology
    • Psychiatry
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Previous research indicated the Meeting Centres Support Programme (MCSP) effectively manages behavioral and mood issues in dementia patients.
    • The MCSP integrates support for both dementia patients and their carers through a single professional staff.
    • A multi-center study was designed to validate these findings across different regions in The Netherlands.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the effectiveness of the MCSP compared to standard day care for community-dwelling dementia patients.
    • To evaluate the impact of the MCSP on behavioral problems, mood, and quality of life in individuals with dementia.
    • To determine if the positive effects observed in a previous study could be replicated in a multi-center implementation.

    Main Methods:

    • A pretest-posttest control group design was employed.
    • 112 dementia patients and their carers participated across eight community centers and three nursing homes.
    • The experimental group (n=89) received the MCSP, while the control group (n=23) received standard day care.

    Main Results:

    • After 7 months, the MCSP showed a moderate positive effect on total behavior problems (effect size=0.52), particularly inactivity (ES=0.37) and non-social behavior (ES=0.60).
    • A large effect was observed on depressive behavior (ES=0.92), and a moderate effect on self-esteem (ES=0.43).
    • These results surpassed those of the initial Amsterdam study.

    Conclusions:

    • The Meeting Centres Support Programme is more effective than regular day care for managing behavioral issues and depressed mood in dementia patients.
    • The program positively influences self-esteem, a crucial component of quality of life.
    • The findings confirm the added value of the MCSP for individuals with mild to severe dementia.
