Summary

A rare case of metastatic carcinoid tumor initially misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma presented with subcutaneous nodules. Treatment with leucovorin calcium and 5-fluorouracil showed partial response in this advanced neuroendocrine cancer.

  • Initial mammography revealed multiple nodular breast lesions, and a biopsy showed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma.

  • A subsequent biopsy confirmed metastatic carcinoid tumor, with a single pulmonary nodule also identified as carcinoid.

Findings:

  • The patient showed no response to streptozotocin and 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy.
  • A combination therapy of leucovorin calcium and 5-fluorouracil resulted in a partial response.

Implications:
