Summary

Hydatid disease rarely affects long bones. A rare case of extensive tibial involvement was successfully treated with chemotherapy and surgery, showing excellent long-term outcomes without recurrence.

  • A 62-year-old woman presented with extensive diaphyseal tibial hydatid disease.
  • The condition posed diagnostic challenges due to its rarity and radiographic similarity to other bone lesions.

Findings:

  • A composite treatment approach involving chemotherapy, curettage, polymethylmethacrylate cementation, and intramedullary fixation was employed.
  • Excellent functional outcomes were achieved, with full weight-bearing and range of motion maintained.
  • No recurrence was observed at a 60-month follow-up period.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a successful management strategy for rare diaphyseal bone hydatidosis.
  • The combined chemotherapy and surgical protocol offers a promising option for long-term disease suppression.
  • Recalcitrant cases may necessitate wide excision and reconstruction.
