Exertional desaturation as a predictor of rapid lung function decline in COPD

Exertional desaturation, identified by the 6-minute walk test, may predict faster lung function decline in COPD patients. This finding offers a new clinical parameter for monitoring disease progression.

- Patients were categorized into desaturator (n=47) and non-desaturator (n=177) groups for comparison.

- A significant difference in the rate of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) decline over 3 years was observed between groups (p=0.006).
- The desaturator group showed a greater mean FEV1 decline (33.8 ml/year) compared to the non-desaturator group (11.6 ml/year).
- The St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) total score also differed significantly between groups over 3 years (p=0.001).
Conclusions:
- Exertional desaturation may serve as a novel predictor of rapid lung function decline in COPD patients.
- The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) can be a valuable tool for identifying COPD patients at risk of accelerated lung function decline.
