Family physicians can improve the identification of elder abuse by recognizing its signs and symptoms. Utilizing tools like the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index can enhance detection and reporting of mistreatment in older adults.

Elder abuse is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality in older adults.
Family physicians are strategically positioned to identify elder mistreatment but report it less frequently than other professionals.

Purpose of the Study:

To outline signs and symptoms suggestive of elder abuse.
To explore the utility of the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index (EASI) and available interventions.

A literature search was conducted across MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Social Work Abstracts (1970-2011).
