Renovating classrooms to be more collaborative did not significantly change teaching behaviors. This study evaluated teaching in traditional versus collaborative classroom designs, finding no major differences in observed behaviors.
Area of Science:
- Educational Psychology
- Classroom Environment Studies
- Pedagogical Research
Background:
- Traditional classrooms feature a front-facing teacher and student rows.
- Academic institutions are increasingly renovating spaces for collaborative learning.
- Limited empirical data exists on the impact of physical space on teaching behaviors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate teaching behaviors in traditional versus collaborative classroom settings.
- To determine if changes in physical classroom space influence pedagogical strategies.
- To provide data on the effectiveness of classroom renovations for collaboration.
Main Methods:
- A mixed-methods research design was employed.
- Expert teachers observed and described behaviors from classroom videos.
- Qualitative analysis was used to identify themes and frequencies of teaching behaviors.
Main Results:
- No significant differences were found in teaching behaviors between traditional and collaborative classrooms.
- Qualitative analysis revealed consistent themes across both classroom types.
- Observed teaching behaviors did not significantly vary based on the physical learning environment.
Conclusions:
- Transforming traditional classrooms into collaborative spaces did not demonstrably alter observed teaching behaviors.
- Further research may be needed to identify factors that influence teaching strategies in different classroom designs.
- The impact of physical space on pedagogy requires more investigation.

E. C. Tolman's theory of purposive behavior emphasizes that much behavior is goal-directed. He argued that to understand behavior, we must look at the entire sequence of actions leading to a goal. For instance, high school students study hard, not just due to past reinforcement but also to achieve the goal of getting into a good college.
Tolman introduced the idea that behavior is influenced by...
